It is produced quarterly to provide sermons for churches without speakers and to give individual members the opportunity to begin building a personal DVD library of favorite Adventist preachers and their sermons..

          Bonus feature:
Jo Ann Davidson: The Woman and Her Mission

    Jo Ann Davidson

Jo Ann Davidson brings a new dimension to Theology. Her in-depth study of God uncovers ideas and concepts that have given her classes a popular edge. Her theological discoveries tantalize the inquisitive and are neither boring nor too deep for any level of understanding.

Signs of Hope is no exception. Dr. Davidson says, "We often reduce our picture of God to 'God is Love' whereas the biblical portrait of God is far grander!" Jo Ann is the second woman to do a series for Adventist Preaching and is the first woman to teach in the Theology Department of Andrews University Theological Seminary.

Pioneering often comes with some degree of difficulty and so it's not surprising that Dr. Davidson encountered some uncomfortable moments while students got used to the idea that a woman would be their instructor. In time, students considered it a privilege to sit at the feet of such a gifted scholar.

Dr. Davidson received a Ph.D from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. She has contributed chapters for several books, authored the book, Jonah: The Inside Story, and has written numerous articles for publications.

Bonuses: How To Preach This Series and Sermon Outlines

    Mike Tucker

Looking back, Mike Tucker would say that he grew up in a rules-oriented church --- an experience that nearly destroyed him. Fortunately at the right time, he was introduced to the gospel from the perspective of the cross. It was then that his life began to change. Today, Mike's understanding of God's grace affects his preaching, his ministry style and his relationships.

He and his wife Gayle are partners in ministry at the Arlington, Texas, Adventist Church. Together they serve the church and community with felt-need seminars and other programs that encourage lasting relationships. Their goal is to reach members of a growing secular society with a faith that meets their needs. During their 13 years of ministry at Arlington, church membership has grown from less than 1,000 to nearly 1,800.

Pastor Tucker is also Speaker/Director for Faith For Today Television Ministries. He holds a Master's Degree in counseling and has authored several books, including Journal of a Lonely God; Jesus, He's All You'll Ever Need; Heart Food; Jesus, Your Heart's Desire; Every Good Thing and Ten Keys to a happy Marriage. This series on Ruth is an example of the grace-filled sermons one would hear at the Arlington church.

Walter L Pearson Jr: Bad Boys

    Ben Carson
A neurosurgeon by profession, Dr. Carson is also a widely influential author and speaker before both Christian and secular audiences. Although he is Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and Professor of Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Oncology and Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University—the author of more than 90 articles in scientific journals, presiding over countless, complex surgeries—it is his story of growing up in the inner city with a Christian mother who believed in education that inspires listeners young and old, sophisticated and not. Through his Foundation and preaching, Dr. Carson seeks to share his faith and change the lives of young people. Your heart will be touched!

    Barry C Black
Perhaps the most visible Seventh-day Adventist minister in the world, Black who currently works on Capitol Hill, is a retired Rear Admiral who worked at the Pentagon in command of all 1,500 chaplains in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. He officiated at John Kennedy, Jr.’s burial at sea in 1999 and led Pentagon memorial services for the victims of September 11, 2001. Raised by a single mother in an inner city housing project, Black calls her “a saint” and says she had “a vibrant, robust spirituality, which she transmitted to me.” She sent him to Pine Forge Academy, on to Oakwood College, seminary at Andrews University, and two doctorates. Yet, in the pulpit and personally, Black has a magnetic capacity to relate to the poor and the powerful, the educated and the uneducated, those of all faiths and none.

    Charles E Bradford
The first African American to be president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America, “Brad” retired in 1990 after 40 years of service as a pastor, evangelist, department director, conference president and General Conference officer. He still preaches often at special convocations and key events. The focus of his leadership, scholarship and passion has persistently been to empower the local church. Bradford’s mother was among the converts from Edson White’s mission based on the boat, the Morning Star. He brings to the pulpit his deep love for the church and expansive vision for its future, as well as the wisdom of one who has led during the civil rights movement, the urban crisis, major doctrinal and institutional challenges, new technologies and emerging, postmodern generations.

    Richard E Barron
Well known as a preacher at major youth congresses and other events for teens and young adults, Barron was the first African American to serve in the youth department of the General Conference. He was an associate director of youth ministries at the GC from 1975 into the mid-1990s and then served as president of Southwest Region Conference. A compelling, riveting speaker who touches the hearts of all ages, Barron early served as a pastor in Northern California and then youth director in the Lake Union Conference. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and has been honored by awards from the Kiwanis Clubs and the NAACP. “God needs all of us—whether we are preachers, teachers, doctors, homemakers, sanitation workers, or technicians—to be proclaimers and messengers for Jesus Christ,” Barron believes wholeheartedly.

    E E Cleveland
One of the greatest evangelists of the 20th century, Cleveland combined soul-winning with concern for social justice, pioneered the concept of national campaigns before satellite technology influenced gospel work globally. The first Adventist to baptize more than 1,000 people in a single campaign, Cleveland still takes every opportunity to enter the pulpit and inspire new generations. “The power of Cleveland’s preaching and personality overwhelmed me,” explains C. D. Brooks about his decision in 1947 to become an evangelist instead of a dentist. He speaks for many others. “Cleveland has earned the respect and appreciation of untold millions of people in more than 60 years of ministry. He is truly a man of God,” reflects Neal C. Wilson, retired GC president

    Benjamin Reaves
While he has served as a college president, seminary professor, General Conference officer and currently vice-president for Adventist Health System, Reaves is at core a pastor, one of the most widely-respected preachers in America. Since 1989, he has been a yearly guest on 30 Good Minutes, the PBS preaching show originating from WTTW, Channel 11 in Chicago. His sermons are included in Preaching Today and Preaching, top Christian journals. Reaves’ messages have “a commanding spirit” says Lydia Talbot of WTTW, but he also reveals a softer side as the star of Grandfather Reads, one of the newest and most enchanting PBS programs, which seeks to make a difference in the lives of children; to instill in them a passion for reading, desire to achieve, and love for humanity.

    Charles D Brooks
The founder of the Breath of Life television ministry, Brooks is well known among Seventh-day Adventists as an evangelist. His sermons are legendary and his tapes widely distributed. He held his first campaign in the early 1950s, while a pastor in Columbus, Ohio. After going on to be senior pastor of the Glenville Church in Cleveland, where he also held campaigns, Brooks became a full-time evangelist for the Columbia Union Conference. In the summer of 1964 he led a major campaign in a large tent in Philadelphia during the “long, hot summer” of urban rioting, defied a plea from the mayor to shut down and still baptized nearly 300 people. He was elected an associate secretary of the General Conference Ministerial Association and from that platform has fearlessly preached the Adventist message around the globe. There are a number of Breath of Life congregations, church plants resulting from evangelism campaigns conducted by Brooks.

    Walter L Pearson Jr
The lead evangelist for NET 2004, Pearson had already preached the gospel in 57 nations on six continents, including campaigns in London, Warsaw, Nairobi and Kingston, Jamaica. The first Adventist to be honored as a member of the Martin Luther King Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Pearson was also the first African American to serve as an associate director at the Ellen G. White Estate before he was appointed director of the Breath of Life television ministry. He was the senior pastor of the 1,500- member North Philadelphia Church for five years and of the 2,100-member Berean Church in Atlanta for eight years. Pearson’s mission is “to preach the everlasting gospel ... from a contemporary, urban perspective.”

His work for Volunteer Ministries compelled him to accept a personal challenge to pastor a church plant in Silver Spring, Maryland. Besides being a very involved father of four and supportive husband to his wife, Ruthie, Rojas determined to bring ten people to Christ through personal witness outside his regular work activities.

Pastor Rojas says, “The exciting part of this series is that it affirms the most foundational elements of Adventist theology and commitment to soul-winning as a way of life.” Rojas believes that ministry is not just for the pastor. It is for every church member.

Jose Rojas is an accomplished musician and recording artist as well as an author and passionate preacher of the Word. He was honored by the Maryland Governor for leadership in community action and serves as a member of The Alliance for Youth, founded by former Secretary of State Colin Powell. His passion is unmistakable as he currently serves the collegiate students and church members at the La Sierra University Church. While general vice-president, Gilley chaired the boards of The Voice of Prophecy, Faith For Today, La Voz de la Esperanza and LifeTalk Radio in addition to overseeing several Division ministries and special projects.

Pastor Gilley says that one of his most challenging assignments at the Division office was in New York City just after September 11  During that very difficult time, he organized hundreds of pastors, counselors and students to minister to the needs of the confused and bewildered inhabitants of Manhattan.

At one point in the road, it was Pastor Gilley’s privilege to hold meetings in the former Soviet Union where he witnessed the baptism of over ten thousand people and saw more than twenty new churches organized.

With such rich experiences behind him, Jim has chosen to spend the final years of his ministry filling the pastorate at the Dallas First Church where he spent many of his teenage years.  First Love: Retracing the Journey, the bonus piece in this edition of Adventist Preaching, was inspired by his decision, and that of several of his colleagues, to voluntarily return to pastoring.

Dr Derek Morris, Senior pastor of the Forest Lake Church, Florida, loves preaching and most agree that he's mastered the art. Morris doesn't stop there. He enjoys teaching the fine skills of sermon content and presentation. He's done so since 1987 when he was professor of preaching and pastoral theology at Southern Adventist University. Since his return to pastoral ministry in 2001, he has continued as an adjunct professor.

He has written extensively in the area of biblical preaching for Ministry magazine and has authored a book, Powerful Biblical Preaching.

In this edition of Adventist Preaching, Pastor Morris suggests that being a healthy Christian is more than just the food we eat. It encompasses every area of the Christian life. The series reveals new areas for growth so that the Christian can be totally healthy.

Frank’s first visit back to Cuba in 1998.

    Frank Gonzalez

Gonzalez fills pulpit for Adventist Preaching
In an age when extreme makeovers are a part of reality TV, Pastor Frank Gonzalez, speaker/director of La Voz de la Esperanza, applies the concept to God's desire to rework our damaged lives. In his five presentations before the employees at the world headquarters of the Adventist Church, he uses biblical examples such as Mary Magdalene and the woman at the well-two women who allowed God to perform an "extreme makeover for the soul."

The series, presented during the Week of Spiritual Emphasis, was videotaped for Adventist Preaching, inspiring sermons series in the DVD format. Designed to be a devotional tool for the Christian home and also as a valuable resource for churches that often find themselves without a speaker, Adventist Preaching is introducing members to their larger church family. As members listen to a variety of Adventist preachers and are blessed by their ministries, they feel a closer kinship to the church as a whole.

Frank Gonzalez accepted the invitation to become a part of the Adventist Preaching mission. His sermons can be used in both English and Spanish gatherings to provide engaging and worshipful services for small to mid-sized churches. Pastor Gonzalez' series, Xteme Makeover for the Soul, is available only in the English language, however, as a leader among Hispanics, the series will be popular among both groups.

Rooted in the turmoil of Cuban unrest, Frank Gonzalez was born to parents whose quest for freedom and the preservation of liberty ultimately separated the family. While a political prisoner, Gonzalez's father paved the way for Frank and his mother to find freedom in America. Going Home, the bonus feature of this series, is a fascinating glimpse back in time and tells the story of Frank's first visit back to Cuba in 1998.

Today, Frank Gonzalez shares the Good News of the Gospel through La Voz de la Esperanza, the Spanish media ministry of the Adventist Church. He is speaker and director.

The latest release of Adventist Preaching, Volume 10 featuring Frank Gonzalez, is available by calling 800-ACN-1119, or visiting www.acn.info and www.adventsource.org. The DVD sets are also available at most Adventist Book Centers.

Interview: Karl Haffner: The Man and His Mission

    Karl Haffner

Haffner presents series for Adventist Preaching
While society is searching for a cure for Alzheimer's and aides, Karl Haffner is also concerned for the sick at heart. "Soul fatigue is epidemic. Folk are worn out, stressed out, and burned out," says Haffner, senior pastor of the Walla Walla College Church. "This was never God's desire for His children. There are things we can do to address the ailments of the common Christian."

In six spiritual, yet entertaining biblical sermons released as Vol 9 of great Adventist Preaching, Pastor Haffner discusses the "Pilgrim's Problems" for the "Last Daze." He challenges Christians to move beyond the "Comfort Zone."

Haffner presented Cures for the Common Christian at Southern Adventist University for the student week of prayer. Haffner is one of several outstanding speakers selected to participate in the Adventist Preaching project. Not only is "Cures for the Common Christian" a DVD resource to assist pastors and local elders with preaching, but it's also dynamic devotional material for small groups and the Christian home.

Pastor Haffner founded The Improv Church, a collegiate alternative worship experience. He talks about it in the interview, The Man and His Mission, a bonus on the 2-DVD set carrying his series. Karl's creative preaching style and his ministry to young adults has captured the attention of young Christians as well as that of more seasoned followers.

Haffner became "Dr" Haffner this summer when he received a Phd in leadership from Andrews University. He is a teaching pastor, popular speaker, writer and an avid reader-especially of John Ortberg's works. He loves a good story and has a gift for gleaning sermon illustrations from them. His eight books and hundreds of articles plus the resulting speaking appointments, keep him on the run.

Yes, Karl takes running seriously too. He's participated in several marathons, but his dedication to preaching the Word is to help as many as possible cross the finish line at the greatest event of all time.

Don C. Schneider, president of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, has been an administrator in several conferences and a union, but his most cherished claim to fame came from a young Pathfinder who called him the "Prayer Guy."

Talking to others about Jesus is the most gratifying part of his Christian life, and Schneider has a great time doing it. "I enjoy life every day because of my walk with Jesus," says Pastor Schneider in his friendly, good-natured manner.

In this series of great Adventist Preaching, Knowing Jesus, Schneider shares four sermons filled with personal stories that demonstrate how knowing Jesus makes it easier to tell people about Him. He personally believes that we must keep on the move, spiritually that is, in order to nurture a relationship that removes the unnecessary fear of reaching out to help others.

Besides the sermon series offered for volume 8 of great Adventist Preaching, Don and Marti Schneider agreed to be interviewed. Their busy lives of service to the Division often requires travel, so the interview was taped on the way to the airport. "Seems like we're always in the air," remarked Marti. "But we've decided to give these years of our lives to this work," added Elder Schneider.

The delightful and entertaining taped interview appears on the DVD as a special feature, Don Schneider: The Man and His Mission, along with a special piece about the Schneider's mission trip to Aba, Nigeria, as part of Global Evangelism.

The Adventist Preaching sermon series on DVD were originally designed to be a vital resource for pastors of multi-church districts, but hundreds of homes are also being blessed by the uplifting messages. Pastors and lay leaders are grateful for a variety of outstanding preachers and topics from which to choose a Sabbath speaker or short series for prayer meeting or vespers.

Through DVD technology, invite NAD president, Don Schneider, to present his series, Knowing Jesus, to your congregation. Call 800-ACN-1119 or visit www.acn.info for more information.

"More About Jesus I would know . . . . " is the desire of every Christian.

Morris and Lee Venden, father and son team, discuss the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus in their 5-part series, More About Jesus,. They explain how Jesus can be at the heart and core of each of our fundamental beliefs..

More About Jesus, Vol 7 of great Adventist Preaching is more than sermons. Each Bible teaching is enhanced by either a dialogue between the Vendens, Venden2Venden, or an interview with someone who has experienced what it means to believe, A Word for Jesus.

The topics covered in More About Jesus are the beliefs we share with the Christian world. They include Can We Be Friends?, What Is A Christian?, Born Twice, Blessed Assurance, and The Answer Is Prayer.

Lee Venden has never forgotten the joy he experienced when he discovered the difference between knowing about Jesus and actually knowing Jesus. A pastor and educator for more than 20 years, Lee has sought to know Jesus better and to help others accomplish that as well.

Morris Venden's message for more than 40 years has revolved around the matchless charms of Jesus and His power to transform lives. Pastor Venden is a popular speaker, but he claims that it's not his speaking that draws people, but rather his message.

Adventist Preaching in the DVD format is a collection of sermon series by some of the outstanding preachers in the Adventist Church. Adventist Communication Network has produced seven quarterly editions.

If you get the opportunity to hear Richard Stenbakken preach, you may be in for an interesting surprise. Stenbakken's sermons often do not include pulpits nor does he wear a suit. Instead he sheds his own identity to present a powerful message through the experiences of Bible characters.

In the latest edition of great Adventist Preaching, a DVD product of Adventist Communication Network (ACN), Dr Stenbakken dressed in authentic costume, portrays the Faces Around the CrossCJohn, Judas, Peter, Pilate, the Centurion and Caiaphas.

Many pastors and lay leaders are considering Faces Around the Cross as a unique approach to sharing the Word. ACN suggests using the creative resource to invite the community to the Adventist Church during Holy Week. Even though many Adventists prefer down-playing the resurrection at this time of year, it can be an effective opportunity for making friends with other faith groups.

For congregations who decide to host the community during Easter week, the series can be shown as is, or it can be enhanced by using the bonus study guides for follow-up discussion. Seasonal music and litanies can also be added. At the close, get acquainted with your guests by serving light refreshments

Richard Stenbakken, Ed. D., Director of Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries for the World Church of Seventh-day Adventists, spent most of his career in pastoral ministry for military personnel. While serving as a chaplain, Stenbakken very accidentally discovered the powerful impact of first- person preaching. It was never his plan to specialize in this medium of delivery, but after recognizing that both the Old and New Testaments use stories, parables and even role-playing, it seemed only natural to develop more characters from Scripture. Thus far he has developed and presented the gospel through the eyes of 45 characters.

Inspiration for Faces Around the Cross came from Ellen White's statement in her book, The Desire of Ages, pages 67-8. "It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should . . . let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones. . . ." "What better way to do that, than to see those scenes through the eyes of the faces around the cross," says Stenbakken.

    Terry Pooler
"The human heart cries out in pain, anger and loneliness. Out of our brokenness we seek sympathetic hearts and ears." Terry Pooler

But what about the cry of God's heart? Our focus can be so self-absorbing that we can't hear God's cry. We are like lost children in a department store crying out in fear, but there is so much commotion that it seems that no one is listening. Because of this noise and the volume of our own crying, we are not able to hear the voice of our parent calling out for us. If we could hear their cry, we could find our way back to their arms.

In my sermon series, "The Cry of God's Heart," I look at a sampling of cries that burst from the passionate heart of Jesus. God has feelings too! If we pause to hear and understand why He cries out, we can find profound meaning and healing for the brokenness in our lives.
